Freshwater Fishes
Fresh water fishes are the fish that inhabit some or nearly all of their lives in rivers and lakes with a salinity of less than 0.05%. These fishes cannot survive in marine conditions. Nearly half of the total fishes in the world are Fresh water inhabitants. Some species of the Fresh water Fishes make great pets indeed. These Fresh water Fishes can again be sub divided into : - i) Cold water Fish : These guys prefer cooler water temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius. Examples are Gold fish and Koi carps. They generally are slow growers and tend to live longer than their tropical cousins. These fish do not require heaters and are ideal for outdoor ponds where temperatures can drop down to 10 degrees Celsius. ii) Tropical Fish : These guys, on the other hand prefer more warmer temperatures. They tend to be more colorful. Some species can grow extremely fast. These fish require heaters and do not fare well in temperatures below 24 degrees Celsius. Examples are Malawi Cichlids, Oscars, etc. List of Common freshwater aquarium fish species A vast number of species of fish have been successfully kept in the home freshwater aquarium.
